PANTEÓ ANSELM CALVÉ

In 1874 choral singing teacher Josep Anselm Clavé passed away and shortly afterwards Barcelona City Council announced a competition to erect a funerary monument in his memory. Lluís Domènech i Montaner and his partner and friend Josep Vilaseca, who had recently graduated in Architecture, won the competition and designed the work. In February 1875 Domènech and Vilaseca published an article in La Renaixensa where they described the design. This was Domènech’s first architectural work.

The monument includes allusions to the teacher’s life (musical instruments, the coat of arms of Barcelona Provincial Government over which he presided, excerpts of poems, etc.). The bust of Anselm Clavé, made in bronze by sculptor Manel Fuxà, crowns the pilaster.

The monument was greatly damaged in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War, and was restored in 1948, though the new design bore no resemblance to the original.
